CSS HUDSON
Dr. Alshuth participated in the two-months JGOFS Expedition (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study) to the Atlantic onboard the Canadian CSS HUDSON, a 300-foot research vessel of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth Nova Scotia (Canada). In collaboration with the University of Kiel (Germany), Dr. Alshuth’s oceanographic research included biological and chemical oceanography studies such as copepod grazing experiments, physiological and behavioral studies of Atlantic copepods. Copepods were collected with ring plankton nets and the Tucker Trawl, a mid-water zooplankton trawl equipped with BIONESS data logger, from surface and mid-waters and kept alive in laboratories aboard the CSS HUDSON for further studies of their excretion and respiration rates, gut pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence of stomach, and ammonia and fecal pellets examinations. Water chemistry studies included CO2 and O2 production measurements using HPLC filtration techniques. Physical oceanography research included the use of CTD probes and Batfish, and the deployment of sediment and particle traps. Research included statistical analysis and preparation of reports, and publications including:
